Indoor tanning and its contribution to skin cancer and melanoma has been a hot topic of discussion for a few years now. With over 30 million people in the US who tan indoors annually, the subject affects us more than we think. 2.3 million indoor tanners are 18-years-old and younger. There is a growing presence of indoor tanning beds in salons, spas, gyms and even apartment complexes. In these non-traditional places people searching for an artificial glow can find it with less supervision and more inexpensively. With the media portraying tan skin as desirable the public is seeing it as normal and common behavior. Studies have shown that between the age of 14 and 17-years-old there is an increase use of tanning beds. This could explain the 60% increase in Melanoma diagnosis in people age 15-39 over the last 30 years.
The World Health Organization categorizes tanning beds as a carcinogenic to humans, but the FDA only classifies them as a Class 1 device along with bandages and exam gloves that are defined to have minimal potential to cause harm to the user. Tanning beds are harmful and shouldn’t be treated under the same category as bandages and exam gloves. No one has ever died from wearing too many bandages. No one has ever died from wearing an exam glove for too long. People have died from using tanning beds. Young people have died and young people have lost their Mothers, Fathers and loved ones. Our young people are affected and it is up to us to protect them when the vultures of the tanning industry are just waiting to prey on their innocent vanity.
Our young people are the reason why tanning legislation is so important. The goal is to ban minors under 18 from using tanning beds. AIM at Melanoma is an organization committed to the education of tanning dangers and advocating for melanoma awareness. They have compiled a list of each State and their current tanning legislation. AIM is always at the forefront for the advocacy of tanning legislation and have helped many people through their Melanoma journeys.
